Learning Objectives

  1. To become familiar with the general health information relevant to diabetic history and control (HbA1c, duration of diabetes, type of diabetes)
  2. To be aware of other systemic health problems that may exacerbate the severity of diabetes
  3. To appreciate that the severity and duration of diabetes can increase the risks of developing diabetic eye disease
  4. To learn the clinical signs and symptoms of diabetic retinopathy/maculopathy
  5. To be aware of the differential diagnoses of diabetic retinopathy/maculopathy
  6. To gain knowledge in what extra optometric tests may provide useful information for the diagnosis and management of diabetic retinopathy
  7. To become familiar with the New Zealand National Diabetes Retinal Screening Grading System and Referral Guidelines (NDRSG), and appreciate its significance in the care of diabetic patients
