Contact

Contact lenses are primarily prescribed for visual correction, therapeutic and cosmetic purposes, and their applications can range from the management of refractive errors, corneal irregularities such as keratoconus, myopia control as well as the management of Steven-Johnson’s syndrome, to name a few. The applications of contact lenses have driven the development of new lens designs and materials since inception. However, the use of contact lenses is not entirely risk free, and this is further implicated by the fact that full compliance to proper contact lens use is rare. Eye care practitioners must have a good understanding of contact lens related problems to prevent complications that may lead to drop-out, infections and permanent vision loss. It is also imperative for eye care practitioners to continually have safety conversations regarding contact lens use with wearers to keep them engaged and educated.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to:
1. Understand the current knowledge about contact lens non-compliance risk factors and how we may manage it in practice,
2. Understand current epidemiology of contact lens related infection in Australia, and
3. Understand risk factors and burden of contact lens related infection in Australia.
