Opportunities for optometrists to become involved in the management of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in varying capacities are set to increase in future as the range of care pathways and treatment options expand for this condition. Many community optometrists are involved in the screening of DR, whilst others are involved the treatment and monitoring of diabetics following referral.
Even if not directly involved already, it is very important for optometrists to have an awareness and understanding of the various treatment options currently available for diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy in this rapidly changing area.
This CPD course considers screening for DR and treatment of DR, which includes laser photocoagulation, emerging medical therapies (e.g. anti-VEGF intravitreal injections and steroid intravitreal implants) as well as surgical options (e.g. vitrectomy).
