Provider: Eye Institute
Optometrist Credits: 1.74 Clinical Diagnostic and 0.33 Glaucoma Event credits
Event Type(s): Conference
In the last 12 months Eye Institute has not had any conferences based in Auckland requiring physical attendance. This was due to restrictions secondary to the COVID-19 pandemic. We did however continue to provide continuing professional education with several very successful webinars (moving forward we plan to have streaming of our main conference later this year), including one which included presentations from our colleagues in clinical medicine.
We have decided to continue with this integration of systemic disease and ocular pathology.
Many eye conditions have underlying systemic causes. As the role of Optometrists in Primary Care increases they are required to have some understanding of the integral risk factors for ocular diseases and many of these are somatic.
Having this understanding is increasingly important as health services become progressively more subspecialised with patient care delivered across multiple sites and specialists. Having the knowledge to discriminate between sinister and non-sinister headache and thus accelerate assessment by Emergency Medicine and knowing when to refer patients with retinal disease to their GP will be just some of the learning points. The clinical medical talks on headache and hypertension/ cardiovascular disease will be accompanied by talks on ocular features of idiopathic intracranial hypertension and retinal vascular disease respectively. We will also have more eye focussed presentations on iris lesions and optic nerve pathology as well.
