With a growing ageing population in NZ and Australia, this CPD course reviews the normal processes involved in retinal ageing and the impact these changes have on visual function.
It is important that optometrists are aware of the normal ageing changes within the eye so that they can be distinguished from pathological disease processes at their earliest stage, allowing early intervention with referral or lifestyle advice.
The course provides details on the role and structure of the retina, and outlines the structural changes that occur with retinal ageing. Theories of retinal ageing are also discussed, with oxidative stress and lipofuscin formation identified as important factors in the process.
